Feminine Energy: The Resource That Makes Our Vision Possible
This is it right here... where it all begins...
For generations, we've been surrounded by stories of what it means to be feminine.
The soft woman. The wild woman. The nurturer. The pin-up or provocateur. Receptive, expressive, flowing, soft. These ideas pervade the language we use and the ideals we aspire to.
“The feminine” has become something we think we can recognize by its appearance. An aesthetic. An archetype. A way of being. “The feminine,” but packaged and sold back to us.
These concepts have confused and obscured what is far more fundamental about feminine energy. It has nothing to do with how we appear and everything to do with what makes life possible in the first place.
Yin, Yang, and the Resource Beneath the ExpressionIn Chinese medicine traditions, yin is feminine energy. First and foremost, it is substance and form. The physical foundation that makes movement yang, masculine energy possible.
Not a reference to gender, these are the balancing forces of all creation.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), blood, fluids, containment, structure are the yin/feminine aspects of creation. While Qi, with its qualities of movement, warmth, and activity, is generally associated with yang. The two are interdependent: Qi moves blood, while blood nourishes and provides a material basis for Qi.
And when you begin to understand this, something shifts.
Here is how I think of it:
The riverbed — form The banks, boundaries, and underlying terrain that give the river its course. This is the structural aspect of yin.
The water — substance The material that fills the river. It holds, nourishes, and provides the medium through which movement occurs. This is the material essence of yin.
The current — movement The activity, force, and momentum of the water. This is the yang aspect.
The feminine/yin aspect is the resource and yang is the allocation of that resource.
Feminine energy is the dark pool within that we draw from… the drawing itself is the yang.
Once you see it this way, everything we associate with feminine energy seems far removed—even the antithesis—of what it truly is.
To be in our deep, true feminine energy, first and foremost, is to be well resourced. Talk about a complete 180 from everything we've observed and believed! Not sexy. Not nurturing. Not performing. Not expressing. Feminine energy is the source energy from which all of these yang expressions become possible.
This layers beautifully over the ancient wisdom that, when in balance, the masculine serves the feminine. Not because of hierarchy, but because movement without form is dispersion—a waste of resources. Movement without substance is literally not possible. There has to be something to move.
And while we all carry both yin and yang— expressing both aspects in our relationships and in the world, I have come to see feminine energy—and its primary healthy expression in the female bodymind—as fundamentally about being well resourced. Because it is only with these resources—this substance—that we can access what gives our energy structure: VISION Women's Sensitivity Is a Resource
And this is where I see women's sensitivity as a profound resource. We have been taught to see our sensitivity as a weakness. To be less sensitive, less affected, more impervious. But our sensitivity is what gives us access to information and clarity that would otherwise be unavailable to us.
Our sensitivity to our environment, our bodies, and the subtle cues around us can offer valuable information. Rather than rendering us less capable, this sensitivity is a part of how we access knowing and intuition, discern what is needed, and perceive whether the conditions around us support our own life, new life, life in general.
Feminine energy is the bricks and the blueprint; masculine energy is the labor and craftsmanship.
Not a hierarchy, a relationship of interdependence.
Being Well Resourced Is Where We BeginThis is the premise The Root Method is built on.
We remove barriers to clear signals from the bodymind. We learn to tend to those signals as the guidance they are. Because they illuminate what is needed to build the resources, within and around us, to restore structure and substance in our physical bodies first.
This is step one.
We cannot effectively create and execute vision, express truth and art, nurture children, community, and creativity, or cultivate the courage and curiosity it takes to know and express ourselves—the constitution required for liberation—without this foundation.
When I witness women striving to receive more, experience and give more pleasure, inhabit their bodies fully, open their hearts, speak their truths, nourish transformation, or even “regulate their nervous systems,” I want them to know that all of it is predicated on being well resourced.
Otherwise, it’s dispersed energy.
And that is why it is possible to endlessly pursue what we believe to be "feminine energy" and continue to feel the whispers, or even screams, of depletion. Purposelessness. Disconnection.
Because our energy needs a physical place to land—a place where it can be contained, given form, and shaped over time. The work is not to push for more expression, more output, or more experience. It is to restore the conditions that make them possible and sustainable.
Because we are mirror of this earth that sustains us.
What I want to leave you with is this:
Whether you are a woman who has leaned heavily into her masculine to make her mark on the world, a woman seeking her softness and sensuality through experiencing her emotions and sensations, some combination and everything in between, I want you to remember that
all of this first needs structure.
Our body is our only means of experiencing this life. It requires minerals, rhythm, light and dark, fluids, community… coherence… to build and sustain things like pleasure, art, and even receptivity.
We cannot continually draw from a source we do not understand or tend with the utmost reverence.
The Root Method begins with our original blueprint: the innate intelligence of the bodymind and our relationship to the earth that sustains us. Through Rooted and Origin , we begin to explore and appreciate this intelligent design, restore our relationship with and trust in the female body, and build the resources that support our vision. Being well resourced is not an endpoint, but the foundational state that allows us to bring our creativity, truth, and legacy into form.
